Who is Alberto M. Carvalho?

Alberto M. Carvalho is an educator and the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the fourth-largest school district in the United States, with over 346,000 students. Carvalho was appointed to superintendency in September 2008, when the district had been facing financial challenges. He was appointed the chairman of a taskforce aimed at improving teaching quality throughout Miami in 2010. Carvalho "franchised" MAST Academy, opening three new schools based on the original Virginia Key institution.

2014 Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho was honored by President Barack Obama Thursday at a ceremony at the White House.

Carvalho, who was named National Superintendent of the Year in February, was honored alongside the National Teacher of the Year and Principal of the Year winners.

Candidates for the national title were measured on their leadership for learning, communication, professionalism, and community involvement.

Carvalho had also been named Florida’s Superintendent of the Year in December.
