Alec Gray

Who is Alec Gray?

Alexander "Alec" Gray was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne in the Victorian Football League.

Gray, a full-back, came to the Melbourne Football Club from Leopold. He made 16 appearances in his debut VFL season and seven more, including a Semi Final, before the war interrupted his career after 1915. Gray resumed at Melbourne in 1919 but the club had a poor year and he experienced a loss in each of his 13 games.

The next phase of his football career was spent in the Victorian Football Association and he played 175 senior games for Northcote. He was one of three players to play in all five of Northcote's premiership teams; the last of in the last of these, he was joint playing coach with Jack Lyngcoln.

He later returned to Melbourne in an administrative capacity and was club secretary from 1948 to 1949, the same years he was mayor of Northcote. After retiring as a footballer he also served as the principal of Gray & Johnson Real Estate.

Gray's son, Malcolm, was the chairman of the International Cricket Council during the 1980s and president from 2000 until 2003.
