Who was Alfred Holt?

Alfred Holt was a Victorian engineer, ship owner and merchant. He lived at Crofton in Liverpool. He was the middle of five brothers, born to George Holt and is noted for being the founder, with his brother Philip Holt, of the Blue Funnel Line in 1866 and the Ocean Steam Ship Company, which owned and operated the majority of the company's vessels and the Blue Funnel Shipping Line. One of his other brothers, George Holt was also a noted Liverpool merchant and ship owner. His youngest brother Robert Durning Holt was Mayor of Liverpool.
