A member of the Ó Cobhthaigh bardic family, An Clasach is noted in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as "a famous poet and man of learning." He had sons Maeleachlainn Ó Cobhthaigh and Domhnall Ó Cobhthaigh, who were also poets.
