Who was Anton Schmid?

Anton Schmid was an Oberst in the Wehrmacht during World War II who was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. This was awarded to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership by Nazi Germany during World War II.

Schmid was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on the 18th of October, 1941 as commander of I/Pz.Rgt. 10.

He was also awarded the Knight's Cross in February 1945, while being commander of the 286. Infanterie Division.

From 25 April 1945 he was Commander of the 281 Infanterie Division. Already on the 29th of April Oberst Schmid decided it was time to leave and he left his command, got rid of his uniform and decorations, dressed himself in civilian clothes and disappeared. This was later held against him by members of the Bundeswehr.
