Who is Augustin Misago?

Augustin Misago was the Roman Catholic bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gikongoro, Rwanda.

Ordained in 1971, Misango was named bishop in 1992. He died in office.

He was accused of helping the Rwandan government commit War Crimes during the mid-1990s. The ethnic violence in Rwanda killed over 800,000 Tutsi people. Specifically, Misago was accused of failing to act to prevent the deaths of 30 school children who were hacked to death with machetes or to render aid to help them. He was also accused of not sending another priest, Father Niyomugabo, aid which resulted in his death. However, he was cleared of both crimes in 2000. His defense was that he was being put on trial for the Catholic religion in the country. 2 other Rwandan Catholic clergy were convicted in the trials and put to death.
