Who is Cynfyn ap Gwerstan?

Cynfyn ap Gwerstan was an obscure Welsh nobleman principally known on account of his son Bleddyn ap Cynfyn, who established the House of Mathrafal over Powys thanks to a Saxon invasion in 1063.

It was said that his father was Gwerstan ap Gwaithfoed and his mother Nest ferch Cadell. It is possible that his father was a Saxon, as the name "Gwerystan" appears to be a Welsh transcription of the Anglo-Saxon name Werestan. Cynfyn married Angharad, daughter of King Maredudd ab Owain of Dyfed.
