Who is Dan Gertler?
Dan Gertler is an Israeli businessman and the founder and President of the DGI Group of Companies. He has large interests in diamonds and copper mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire, the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa. He has also invested in iron ore, gold, cobalt, agriculture, banking and oil.
Since the 2000s offshore companies associated with Dan Gertler, a friend of Augustin Katumba Mwanke, purchased mining projects directly from the Congolese government. This move has been seen as controversial by some. Gertler denies any wrongdoing and asserts that he's helping the Congolese people by providing jobs, schools and other basic supplies.
In 2013 Dan Gertler was one of seventeen billionaires from Israel who was listed in 670th place on the Forbes list of billionaires with a fortunes of $2.2 billion. His partner in Global Enterprises Corporate, mining magnate Beny Steinmetz, ranked in 316th place a fortune of $4.1 billion.
