Who is Dimitrios Siganos?

Dimitrios Siganos is an ophthalmic surgeon. He is pioneer of refractive surgery.

He graduated from the Cairo University School of Medicine with the title MD Ph.D and Masters in Ophthalmology he followed an academic career at the University of Crete as a PhD and then as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology. During this period he was head of Βαρδινογιάννειο Εργαστήριο Μεταμοσχεύσεων και Μικροχειρουργικής του Οφθαλμού. Together with Ioannis Pallikaris he published the book LASIK, book about method with the same name.

Siganos introduced clear lensectomy method in ophthalmology, removal of part of lens for the correction of hyperopia. He was the first person to apply the insertion of ICL and PRL lenses to correct myopia and presbyopia. He served as clinical adviser of refractive surgery and cataract surgery in many international centers in Europe and the Middle East.

He wrote many books, works, articles in medical journals and made more than 200 presentations at conferences of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and other international conferences. He was the first person in Greece to implement a Crystalens and Ferrara ring.
