Who was Edgar Petersen?

Edgar Petersen was a German Luftwaffe bomber pilot and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during World War II. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Petersen was instrumental in converting the Focke-Wulf Fw 200 into what Winston Churchill called the "Scourge of the Atlantic" during the Battle of the Atlantic. He also served in the position of Kommandeur der Erprobungstellen as an Oberst later in the war.
