Who was Edward Southwell?
Edward Southwell of King's Weston, Gloucestershire was an Irish politician.
He was the son of Edward Southwell and grandson of Sir Robert Southwell.
He sat in the Irish House of Commons for Downpatrick from 1727 until his death. He succeeded his father as Principal Secretary of State in 1730, and on 6 May 1732 he was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland.
He married on 21 August 1729 Catherine Watson, daughter of Edward Watson, Viscount Sondes and Lady Catherine Tufton. Their son Edward Southwell later became Baron de Clifford.
He sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1739 to 1754 as MP for Bristol.
