Who is François Thureau-Dangin?

François Thureau-Dangin was a French archaeologist, assyriologist and epigrapher. He played a major role in the deciphering of Sumerian and Akkadian languages. Thureau-Dangin was from 1895 to 1928 chief curator at the Louvre and a leading expert on Babylonian cuneiform texts. Along with Georges Dossin founded the Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale, an association of orientalists, which hosts international events. He was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres.
