Who was George Avis Fulcher?
George Avis Fulcher was an American clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church. He was Bishop of Lafayette in Indiana from 1983 to 1984.
George Avis Fulcher was born in Columbus, Ohio on January 30, 1922. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in 1944 in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus. He moved throughout the Ohio area throughout his pastoral career. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Columbus in 1976. He was also appointed Titular Bishop of Morosbisdus in 1976. It was in 1983 that Bishop George Avis Fulcher was appointed by Pope John Paul II bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette in Indiana. Within three weeks of his installation as Bishop, he was appointed to the US Bishops' Committee for the implementation of the Pastoral Letter on Peace. While driving to a conference on to lecture on the Peace Pastoral in January 25, 1984, Bishop Fulcher died when his car crashed off US-41 at Gobbler's Knob north of Rockville. Fulcher served as bishop of the Lafayette diocese for only about one year. Fulcher was 62 years old at the time of his death.
