Who was George Townshend?
George Townshend was a British naval commander.
Townshend was the eldest son of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend, and his second wife Dorothy, sister of Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. Charles Townshend, 3rd Viscount Townshend, Thomas Townshend, William Townshend and Roger Townshend were his elder half-brother while George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend, and Charles Townshend were his nephews. He served in the Royal Navy commanding British fleet during the Siege of Genoa in 1746 and achieved the rank of Admiral in 1765.
Townshend died in August 1769.
