Giuseppe Mazzuoli
Painting, Visual Artist
1536 – 1589
Who was Giuseppe Mazzuoli?
Giuseppe Mazzuoli was an Italian painter of the Mannerist period, active mainly in the court of Alfonso II d'Este of Ferrara.
Also nicknamed il Bastaruolo derived due to dialect term describing his father's profession selling foodstuffs, including corn. He needs to be differentiated from the Ludovico Mazzuoli who painted in Ferrara and the baroque sculptor of the same name. He painted the ceiling of the church of the Gesu in Ferrara, a work started by Giovanni Francesco Surchi. He was reportedly a pupil of Dosso Dossi, and the teacher of Carlo Bononi. He also painted some altarpieces for the Cathedral of Ferrara.
