Who is Godfrey Henry Palmer?
Geoff Palmer or birth name Godfrey Henry Oliver Palmer is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Life Sciences of Heriot-Watt University of Edinburgh, Scotland, the first black professor in Scotland.
Palmer is also a Human Rights activist who is involved in a considerable amount of charity work in the community. He is also a grain scientist: see Cereal Science and Technology text book by G.H. Palmer. Inventor of the Barley Abrasion process. Extensive expertise on barley, sorghum, other cereals and malt. He recently developed a new simple method to detect pre-germination in cereal grains showing difference in amylase actions of individual grains of a barley sample containing different degrees of pre-germination. Similar results are obtained for wheat. The lighter the iodine colour the greater the degree of pre-germination. Results can be expressed in Optical Density. See picture File:Degrees of Barley Pregermination by Prof Geoff Palmer.jpg. In the journal,'International Brewer and Distiller',Volume 8,Issue 8, August 2012, Page 5, it was reported that Prof Palmer has 'requested samples of pre-germinated grain as he is developing a new amylase test which will look at the distribution of the enzyme across individual grains in a sample. A Small number of grains, with high amylase/pre-germination activity, can cause unexpected storage or processing problems and visual or average analyses do not always identify uneven distribution. Please contact him at his email address and then you will be asked to send max 100g samples'. Prof Palmer can be also be contacted through the Heriot-Watt University.
