Who is Gordon Downie?

Gordon Downie is a British former swimmer who competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal as part of the British 4x200 m freestyle relay. Although born in Wisconsin, USA, his father was Scottish and he swam for Great Britain and Scotland where he swam for Warrender Baths Club in Edinburgh. He also swam for the University of Michigan while studying there on an athletics scholarship.

Downie won a silver medal at the 1975 World Championships in Cali, Columbia as part of the British 4x200 m freestyle relay with Alan McClatchey, Gary Jameson, and Brian Brinkley and a bronze medal as part of the Bristish 4x100 m medley relay with David Wilkie, James Carter and Brian Brinkley. He also swam in the 1977 European Swimming Championships in Jönköping, Sweden, for Scotland in the 1975 8-nations tournament in Mallorca, Spain and for Scotland in the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada.

In 2004 Downie was a doctor at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
