Who was H. E. Stokke?

Halvdan Eyvind Stokke, birth name Halvdan Eyvind Johannessen, commonly known as H. E. Stokke was a Norwegian railway director and politician.

He was born in Fredrikstad, Østfold to Anton Johannessen and his wife Helen Anderson. In the 1920s, he studied telegraphy in Oslo and was employed at Telegrafverket. After the Second World War, Stokke was appointed political advicer of the Norwegian Ministry of Labour.

Stokke served as mayor of Aker from 1946 to 1947, and mayor of Oslo from 1948 to 1950. He was general director for the Norwegian State Railways from 1951 to 1966.
