Who is Heiko von der Leyen?

Heiko Echter von der Leyen is a German professor of medicine and the husband of politician Ursula von der Leyen. He is a member of the ancient noble Leyen family.

After finishing his medical education at the University of Hamburg, Hanover Medical School and Stanford University, he was a faculty member at Stanford for several years He earned his Habilitation at Hanover Medical School in 1998 and was an extraordinary Professor of Internal Medicine and Experimental Cardiology at Hanover Medical School from 2002.

He became the Director of Hanover Clinical Trial Center GmbH in 2005. Originally the company was a pharmaceutical company performing clinical tests. Since Oktober 2011 the company has shifted its focus to business development in the region of Hanover.

Heiko and Ursula von der Leyen have seven children.
