Who is James A. Piper?
James A. Piper is a New Zealand/Australian physicist, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Physics at Macquarie University.
Piper studied at University of Otago, New Zealand, B.Sc., 1968, and completed a Ph.D. there in 1971, in Atomic Physics. His post doctoral research was on gas lasers, with Colin Webb at Oxford.
Piper has a strong international reputation for Gas laser research in Continuous wave metal ion, cyclic pulsed metal vapour lasers and metal ion recombination lasers. He is also co-author, with Frank Duarte, of a number of seminal papers on laser oscillator physics.
Piper's research in solid-state lasers has focussed mainly on Diode-pumped solid-state lasers and related thermal engineering, mid-infrared solid state laser materials, solid state Raman lasers, and novel self-frequency-doubling laser materials.
