Who was James Arndell Youl?
Sir James Arndell Youl was an Australian business agent, grazier and pisciculturist.
Youl was born in Parramatta, New South Wales. He married Eliza Cox in July 1839. From 1854 lived primarily in Clapham, Surrey, England, where he died; he was buried at West Norwood Cemetery.
In England he promoted Tasmania and its products. He is best known for introducing brown trout and salmon to Australia. After several failed attempts he succeeded in transporting the ova using moss in ice. In 1864 The Norfolk, delivered 100,000 salmon and trout ova to Tasmanian hatcheries on the River Plenty. Propagated to other regions, this created the Australian fly-fishing sport.
