Who was James MacDonnell?

James MacDonnell was an Irish cricketer who played for Gloucestershire. He was born in Ireland and died in Brighton.

MacDonnell made a single first-class appearance for the team, during the 1881 season, against Surrey, having played for the Gentlemen of Hampshire twenty-one years previously.

In the only first-class innings in which MacDonnell batted, he scored a duck, in a match which Gloucestershire won by an innings margin in spite of four members of the Gloucestershire team failing to register a run.
