Who was Jim Sutherland?
James "Jim" Sutherland was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Washington State University from 1956 to 1963, compiling a record of 37–39–4. Sutherland had previously served as an assistant coach at the University of California, Berkeley under Pappy Waldorf and at the University of Washington under John Cherberg. Sutherland was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He moved to California as a child and graduated from Inglewood High School in 1933. Sutherland played college football as the University of Southern California from 1934 to 1936. After graduating from USC in 1937 he became a football and track coach at Santa Monica High School, where he was head football coach from 1941 to 1952 with the exception of three years that he served in the United States Navy. Sutherland died at his home in Hayden Lake, Idaho on June 21, 1980.
