Johan Peter Rottler was a botanist.
Rottler was born at Strasbourg, France in June 1749, where he also studied. He was ordained and arrived at the Danish Lutheran Mission at Tranquebar in South India. He labored at Tranquebar and Madras till his death on January 24, 1836.
As an enthusiastic botanist he collected more than 2000 plant samples from South India and sent them to Europe for study and research. His work appeared as "Botanische Bemerkungen auf der Hin- und Rückreise von Trankenbar nach Madras vom Herrn Missionar Rottler zu Trankenbar mit Anmerkungen von Herrn Professor C. L. Willdenow. Neue Schriften der Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin, Neue Schriften, vol 4: 180-224. 1803".
Rottler also accompanied Lord North, the first British Governor of Ceylon, in 1795 who wanted a botany scholar to accompany him on a trip to the island.
