Who was John Cawse?
John Cawse was an English painter, born in about 1779. He exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy in 1802, and afterwards historical pictures. He is best remembered for his work The Art of Painting Portraits, Landscapes, Animals, Draperies, &c., in oil colours, published in 1840. He was an amateur musician and, unusually for the time, played the viola da gamba; an instrument he once owned is in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
His portrait of the clown Joseph Grimaldi is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. and his 1826 painting of Carl Maria von Weber belongs to the Royal College of Music.
He died in 1862.
