Who was John Patrick Barnes?

John Patrick "Pat" Barnes was a city councilman in Columbia, Missouri.

John Patrick Barnes was born July 2, 1941, in Columbia, Missouri to Donnie and Rose Heisler Barnes. From humble beginnings, he began his career as a maintenance man for Holiday House apartments in the 1960s, Barnes worked his way up to become a vice president and part-owner of Executive Affiliates. Executive Affiliates owns properties in 12 states and 16 cities of which Barnes was the part-owner of almost every one. He was also the city of Columbia's biggest landlord. Notable real estate projects in which Barnes was involved include the Columbia Expo Center and the Holiday Inn Executive Center.

From 1973 to 1979, Barnes served on the Columbia City Council as representative of the First Ward. From 1981 to 1989, he served on the Columbia City Council as representative of the Fourth Ward.

In 1964, Barnes founded the Central Missouri Radio Squad, which in 1970 became the Boone County Fire Protection District, one of the state of Missouri's largest volunteer fire departments and one of 28 national urban search and rescue task force, Urban Search and Rescue Missouri Task Force 1. Barnes volunteered as the district’s first assistant fire chief until his death.
