Joseph Naudet

Who was Joseph Naudet?

Joseph Naudet was a French historian who was a native of Paris.

He initially worked at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, and was later a teacher of Latin poetry at the Collège de France. In 1817 he became a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, where in 1852 he was appointed "secrétaire perpétuel". Naudet was also a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques and served as curator of the Bibliothèque Mazarine.

Among his written works was a three-volume edition of the comedies of Plautus titled- M. Accii Plauti Comoediae and a work on Roman nobility called De la noblesse chez les Romains. He also edited and translated works by Catullus, Horace, Lucan, Sallust, Seneca and Tacitus. With Pierre Daunou, he edited the twentieth volume of Recueil des historiens des Gaules et de la France.
