Who is Joseph Payne?

Joseph Spencer Payne was an English cricketer. Payne was a right-handed batsman who bowled left-arm roundarm medium pace. He was born at East Grinstead, Sussex.

Payne made his first-class debut for Sussex against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's in 1861. He took figures of 4/29 in the Marylebone Cricket Club's first-innings, but wasn't required to bowl in their second-innings, with the Marylebone Cricket Club winning by 85 runs. He made a second first-class appearance for Sussex in that season against Kent at the Royal Brunswick Ground, Hove. He took his only career five wicket haul in Kent's first-innings, with figures of 8/73. Despite this, Kent won the match by 8 wickets. He later made a single first-class appearance for Kent against Yorkshire at Swatter's Carr, Middlesbrough. Payne took one wicket in the match, which ended in a 4 wicket victory for Yorkshire.

He died at Greenwich, Kent, on 12 April 1880. His brothers, Charles and Richard, played first-class cricket, as did his nephews William Payne and Alfred Payne. Another possible relation is the cricketer George Payne, who was born in East Grinstead in 1850.
