Who was Joseph Scott?
Joseph Scott was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia. He was a member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1759 to 1760.
Scott served as quartermaster in the 67th Foot and came to Halifax with Edward Cornwallis in 1749. He established himself as a merchant there, also operating a sawmill in Sackville. In 1752, he was named justice of the peace and judge in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. Two years later, he was appointed lumber surveyor. He also served as paymaster for the garrison at Halifax from 1761 to 1763. Scott married Margaret Ramsey Cottnam in 1763 and built the Scott Manor House beside Fort Sackville on land he received from his brother George Scott. He died in Sackville.
