Who is Marek?

Marek was an eleventh century bishop of Płock, Poland.

Marek is the first bishop of Płock about which we have historical records and may have been the first actual bishop. He was bishop from 1075 until 1088. He obtained consent for the creation of the bishopric in Płock and tradition holds that he was appointed to the bishopric by Bolesław the Bold, as part of the struggles between Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor. Although this contest was a formative time for the Polish state, and despite Marek's role, little is known of his career or episiciple work.

Marek may have been banished during the rule of Władysław Herman. He probably died in Rome.
