Who is Maya Belenkaya?
Maya Petrovna Belenkaya is a former Soviet figure skater. With her partner Igor Moskvin, she was the 1953-1954 USSR national champion. She skated both in singles and pairs.
Maya Belenkaya was born in Leningrad and lived there throughout her whole life. She survived the Siege of Leningrad and was awarded the Medal "For the Defence of Leningrad". She started skating at the age of 12 in the Pioneers Palace. At first she was coached by A. Zhdanov. Belenkaya was two-time USSR national champion, three-time silver medalist and bronze national medalist.
She coached numerous singles and pairs skaters to national titles, most notably Alexei Mishin and Liudmila Smirnova / Andrei Suraikin.
