Who is Mose Kalev?

Mose Kalev is a documentary photographer and rancher from rural Alabama. He is known for his work examining ethnic segregation and the rural American landscape.

His photography has a distinctive recognizable style which is often combined with short essays that document ethnic segregation and are often focused on the black belt region of Alabama in the southern United States. His stories are unique in that they are predominately from primary sources and depict events that have often never been spoken of publicly. The texts are often interactive which lead readers to audio or video files of rare discussions of events such as lynchings with the region’s actual witnesses. Known for his reclusive nature, Kalev has granted only one known interview in the past ten years and rarely exhibits his work outside of academic settings. In the past several years he has donated several pieces for charitable causes that support environmental research on the Athabascan tar sands of northern Alberta where he lives part time.
