Who is Patrick Prendergast?
Patrick Prendergast BA, BAI, PhD, ScD, C.Eng, FIEI, MRIA, FREng is the Provost of Trinity College, Dublin.
Born in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Patrick Prendergast first came to Trinity as an undergraduate student, taking his degree in engineering in 1987 and PhD in 1991. After post-doctoral positions in Italy and the Netherlands, he returned to a lecturing post at Trinity in 1995, and was elected a Fellow of the college in 1998. Passionately committed to research, he established the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering in 2002, was elected MRIA in 2008 and awarded an Doctor of Science in 2009. He served as Dean of Graduate Studies, 2004-7, and was appointed Vice-Provost in 2008. When, in October 2010, he declared his intention to stand in the forthcoming election for Provost, he was considered an early favourite; a lead he built on to win the election on Trinity Monday of 2011. In 2014, his entrepreneurship and business oriented policies led to significant unrest in the college community.
