Who was Pieter Faes?
Pieter Faes, was an 18th-century flower painter from the Southern Netherlands. He was born at Meir, near Hoogstraten, in the province of Antwerp and followed the manner of painting flowers and fruit by Van Huysum. His flower paintings served as models for the painter-sculptor Jean Baptiste Berré. His pictures are tastefully composed and delicately pencilled, but are somewhat deficient in vigour and chiaroscuro. Many of his works were transferred from Laeken to Vienna. He died at Antwerp in 1814.
