Suomalainen has won four singles and five doubles titles on the ITF tour in her career. On 10 October 2011, she reached her best singles ranking of world number 356. On 4 December 2006, she peaked at world number 528 in the doubles rankings.
Since her debut for the Finland Fed Cup team in 2002, Suomalainen has a 28–25 record in Fed Cup competition.
