Who is Raphael Strauss?

Raphael Strauss, born in Bavaria, was a German American portrait artist, who worked in the United States during the middle and the end of the 19th century. Raphael was born in Germany in March 1830. He immigrated to the United States and was married to Caroline Baermann in 1858. Raphael lived most of his life in Cincinnati, Ohio. Raphael was Vice President of the Cincinnati Art Club and was listed in the city directory for more than twenty years. He died in Cincinnati in 1901. Raphael and wife Caroline were the parents of Joseph Strauss, a German-American structural engineer and designer.
