Who was Theagenes of Thebes?

Theagenes of Thebes, not to be confused with Theagenes of Patra or Theagenes of Megara, was the fifth and last general of the Sacred Band of Thebes and the Theban army. When Athens, Thebes and their allies were defeated by Philip II of Macedon at the Battle of Chaeronea on August 2, 338 BCE, Theagenes died in that battle with his Sacred Band of Thebes beside him as his personal guard of three hundred..
