Who is Tommy Thompson?

Tommy Brian Thompson is an American manager in minor league baseball. A catcher and first baseman during his playing days, he batted left-handed, threw right-handed, stood 6 feet tall and weighed 180 pounds.

Thompson was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City and attended the University of Oklahoma. His playing career extended from 1979 through 1988, in the farm systems of the Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox, peaking at the Triple-A level for the Richmond Braves, Buffalo Bisons, Vancouver Canadians and Hawaii Islanders. His best offensive season was in 1984, when he batted .321 in 324 at bats for the Double-A Greenville Braves. Overall, Thompson hit .277 with 69 home runs during his ten-year minor league career.

He later managed in the farm systems of the White Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles, and served as a roving catching instructor in the White Sox organization. He managed the Class A Frederick Keys of the Carolina League from 2007 through mid-May 2008 and was given the 2007 Cal Ripken, Sr. Memorial Award in recognition for his work in the Baltimore farm system.
