Who is Yifang Chen?

Dr. Yifang Chen is a Principal Scientist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory of UK in charge of lithography based nanotechnology. He has been working on nanoscience and nanotechnology since 1990 when he started his study for a D.Phil in quantum transport in nanostructures/devices at the Condensed Matter Physics Department of the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford University. Since 1995 after receiving the D.Phil degree, he has worked on various pioneering aspects of nano-science for Delft University of Technology and the University of Glasgow. Dr. Chen is particularly interested in nanotechnology and its applications for nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, metamaterials and nano bioscience. In his long-time working experiences in nanotechnology, Dr Chen has made numerous achievements in nanofabrication including the world’s shortest T gate, novel LOR/PMMA bilayer, hot developing for HSQ. He was also the first to imprint 3D T gates using imprint lithography and fabricated world’s first high electron mobility transistors by imprint technique. He has over 120 publications in physics and technical journals. In recent years his work on applications of cutting-edge nanolithography for the manufacturing of planar and multi-layered nanophotonic metamaterials has enabled scientists in nanophotonics discover a number of new physics in the field. Because of this, he has been frequently invited to give invited talks in major international conferences on nanophotonics and metamaterials. He has been invited to deliver tutorial course in Nanofabrication for Nanophotonic and Metamaterials in the conference, META’10, Cairo Egypt. He is currently a coordinator of a major nanotechnology TSB project with 7 partners in the UK. He is also the leader of another consortium for an EU People Exchange Scheme with six partners. He is a key partner in the consortium for an on-going multimillion EPSRC Basic Technology Project, Nanoscope: Seeing inside a living cells. He is a visiting professor at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. He is also a guest professor at Fudan University China, leading a Nanoimprint group at the Microelectronics Department at the university. He also co-chairs the UK-China Nanoforum Workshop in Shangahi, China, brought together both UK and China top class scientists and laboratory heads to explore interactions toward potential collaborations.
