Who was Albert Goodwin?
Albert Goodwin was a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford and later Professor of Modern History in the University of Manchester. He outlined his liberal ideas on the reasons behind the French Revolution in his book of the same name. He saw the Revolution as, 'a merciless conflict between aristocracy and democracy' laying heavy emphasis on the role of Louis XVI and his failings in opposing reform and refusing to take on the role of a constitutional monarch.
