Who is Ahad Israfil?
Ahad Israfil is a gunshot victim from Dayton, Ohio, remarkable for his recovery from an injury that destroyed most of one of his cerebral hemispheres.
In 1987, aged 14, Ahad was shot in the head at work when his employer had supposedly knocked a firearm to the floor. After a five-hour operation, doctors were amazed when he attempted to speak.
The injury destroyed much brain tissue and half of his skull, but the skin of his scalp survived. After the void within his skull had been filled in with a silicone block by Dr. James Apesos, the flap of skin was pulled over and hair regrew, giving him a fairly normal appearance.
Although Ahad now uses a wheelchair, he has regained most of his faculties and has successfully obtained a degree. He has also appeared on television programs such as World of Pain, and Ripley's Believe it or Not.
