Who is Al-Lawatis?

Al-Lawaeeya, Al-Lawatia or Al-Lawati is an old Arabic tribe which extends in genealogical origin to Loaey Ibn Elhareth Ibn Sama Ibn Loaey Ibn Ghaleb Ibn Feher Ibn Malek Ibn Alnadher Ibn Kanana Ibn Khozayma Ibn Modraaka Ibn Elyas Ibn Modher Ibn Nazar Ibn Maad Ibn Adnan. The tribe, known as Ibn-Loaey at that time, lived and prospered in Oman and in the year 93 Hijri they aided Mohammed Ibn Al-Gasem Al-Thaqafy’s army which conquered Sind, Multan and Makaran under orders from the second Islamic Caliph Umar together with Banu Tamim, Thaqeef and Abdel Qays tribes.

The origin of the name “Lawati” has been a subject of great dispute, however, it is most likely that the name was altered from “Lawaeei” in reference to Loaey, the great ancestor of the tribe. This alteration is common in Arabic as evident in the Quran and in local Omani accents.
