Who was Alexander Baring, 6th Baron Ashburton?
Alexander Francis St Vincent Baring, 6th Baron Ashburton KG, KCVO, KStJ, DL was a British businessman and politician.
He studied at Eton and Sandhurst, serving in World War I in the Royal Scots Greys.
In 1924, he married Doris Mary Therese Harcourt, daughter of the 1st Viscount Harcourt. Through her, the family acquired the famous 'Harcourt emeralds'.
In World War II, he served in the Auxiliary Air Force, before returning to his career in the City of London, as a director of the family bank.
Baron Ashburton and his family lived in Hampshire, where he was active in County life, serving as a county councillor and Lord Lieutenant.
He was appointed Knight of the Garter in 1969. Since his death, his Garter banner has been on display at Winchester Cathedral.
He died in 1991, leaving two sons. The title passed to his elder son, John.
