Who is Andrea Orcel?

Andrea Orcel,head of Global Origination. In that role since 2007, Mr. Orcel is responsible for Merrill Lynch's investment banking activities globally as well as for all debt and equity businesses in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He has been president of EMEA Global Markets Investment Banking since 2004. Mr. Orcel joined Merrill Lynch in 1992 as part of the financial institutions group. He eventually led that business globally between 2001 and 2007. In 2004, he expanded his role, becoming head of EMEA investment banking. Mr. Orcel continues to dedicate a substantial portion of his time to clients. Throughout his career, he has played a critical role in expanding the Merrill Lynch franchise in Europe, personally developing key relationships and driving some of the area's landmark transactions. Some of those transactions have included: Fortis, RBS and Santander consortium acquisition of ABN AMRO (71 billion) and related financing-51 billion overall equity line; Fortis 13.4 billion rights issue, 2.0 billion CCEN, 3.0 billion CASHES and Ping An equity investment (1.8 billion, 4.2 percent); RBS 6.2 billion Preference Shares; Santander 7.0 billion mandatory convertible and Santander sale of Antonveneta (9.0 billion) to Monte dei Paschi di Siena.Endesa defense from Gas Natural, then EON and eventual sale to Enel and Acciona (42.5 billion)UniCredit acquisition of Capitalia (22 billion)Intesa merger with Sanpaolo IMI (65 billion)Santander, Endesa and Unin Fenosa consortium sale of Amena andAuna (12.8 billion) to France Telecom and ONORAS merger into Allianz (5.7 billion) leading to the creation of the first Societas Europaea in the financial sectorUniCredit acquisition of HVB, BA-CA and BPH (19.2 billion), and subsequent group restructuring and minorities squeeze-out (2.0 billion)Santander acquisition of Abbey National (12.8 billion) and unwinding of cross shareholding with RBS, resulting in 5 billion accelerated equity placementBBV merger with Argentaria ($11.4 billion) Mr. Orcel previously worked at Goldman Sachs and at the Boston Consulting Group.
