Who was Anne Christopher?

Anne Langston Christopher was an American supercentenarian who was, at age 112 years 220 days., the oldest validated person living in the state of Georgia, the seventh-oldest in the United States, as well as the 11th-oldest in the world with the September 20, 2007 death of Australia's oldest person, Myra Nicholson. Christopher was born in South Carolina, where she lived in Timmonsville and Pickens respectively, and only moved to Georgia in 2002 at 107 to live near her relatives. She claimed to remember the historical flight of the Wright brothers in 1903 when she was 8 and the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 when she was 17. Anne had no secrets for her Longevity Other than to attribute it to God's mercy and eating and sleeping well.

When asked to explain her longevity, Anne admitted at 111 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article, "I don't know. I wonder why. I haven't done anything special.

We don't know why I'm living so long, do we?" She once attributed her good health and long life to eating and sleeping well. "I never drank. I didn't smoke, either," she said.Then, her granddaughter Harriett Brock of Rome refreshed her memory.Don't you remember when you come to my house, I give you a glass of wine?" her granddaughter asked. Anne was reared on a tobacco farm, taught second grade, could easily wring a chicken's neck and pluck it clean for cooking and was a Clark Gable fan. Though her life at assisted living centers was good, she figured the afterlife will be even better, according to the AJC article. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gignilliatte Garvin Christopher, former mayor of Pickens, SC; her son, Gignilliatte Garvin Christopher, Jr.; her daughter, Ann Christopher Brown; grandsons, Harry Floyd Emmitt and Hugh Gilbert Brown III; a sister, Orilla Langston Vassy; a brother, Henry Abbott Langston II; and 2 sons-in-law, Hugh Gilbert Brown, Jr, and Harry Floyd Emmitt. She is survived by her daughter, Marion Christopher Emmitt of San Antonio, Texas; and four grandchildren, Harriett Brown Brock and husband Edward, Jr., and Patricia Brown Pack, Rome Ga.; Teresa Emmitt LaFuze, Houston, Texas; and Robert Emmitt and wife Julie, San Antonio, Texas. She was survived by 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two nephews, Dr. Charles Allen Vassy and wife Julia, Clinton, SC; and McAdams Christopher and wife Barbara, Greenville, SC and niece, Joanne Christopher Cochran and husband Warren, Greenville, SC; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews from Columbia, Aiken, Florence and Greenville, SC.
