Who was Anthony Trollope?

Anthony Trollope was one of the most successful, prolific and respected English novelists of the Victorian era. Some of his best-loved works, collectively known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire, revolve around the imaginary county of Barsetshire. He also wrote perceptive novels on political, social, and gender issues, and on other topical matters.

Noted fans have included Sir Alec Guinness, former British Prime Ministers Harold Macmillan and Sir John Major, economist John Kenneth Galbraith, English judge Lord Denning, American novelists Sue Grafton and Dominick Dunne, poet Edward Fitzgerald, artist Edward Gorey, who kept a complete set of his books, American author Robert Caro and soap opera writer Harding Lemay. Trollope's literary reputation dipped somewhat during the last years of his life, but he regained the esteem of critics by the mid-twentieth century.

Famous Quotes:

  • He must have known me if he had seen me as he was wont to see me, for he was in the habit of flogging me constantly. Perhaps he did not recognize me by my face.
  • As to that leisure evening of life, I must say that I do not want it. I can conceive of no contentment of which toil is not to be the immediate parent.
  • I hold that gentleman to be the best-dressed whose dress no one observes.
  • I judge a man by his actions with men, much more than by his declarations Godwards -- When I find him to be envious, carping, spiteful, hating the successes of others, and complaining that the world has never done enough for him, I am apt to doubt whether his humility before God will atone for his want of manliness.
  • Marvelous is the power which can be exercised, almost unconsciously, over a company, or an individual, or even upon a crowd by one person gifted with good temper, good digestion, good intellects, and good looks.
  • And above all things, never think that you're not good enough yourself. A man should never think that. My belief is that in life people will take you at your own reckoning
  • The satirist who writes nothing but satire should write but little -- or it will seem that his satire springs rather from his own caustic nature than from the sins of the world in which he lives.
  • Success is the necessary misfortune of life, but it is only to the very unfortunate that it comes early.
  • Book love... is your pass to the greatest, the purest, and the most perfect pleasure that God has prepared for His creatures.
  • They are best dressed, whose dress no one observes.
