Who is Antonio María Rouco Varela?

Antonio María Rouco Varela is a Spanish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church and a prominent member of its conservative wing. He currently serves as Archbishop of Madrid, and he was elevated to the cardinalate in 1998. Although he became 75, the customary retirement age for a bishop, in 2011, he continues to serve as of January 2014. He will on the other hand soon leave the presidency of the Spanish episcopal conference, and has lost his influential seat on the Congregation for Bishops.
