Who is Arícia Mess?

Arícia MessbyPatrícia PalumboARICIA MESS – I WANNA BLACKTaken from the song "Black is beautiful" by the Valle brothers, this phrase somewhat defines the sound of Arícia Mess. Since the early 90's she has brought a mix of funk, soul, blues and swing to our Brazilian music. "Carioca" (native of Rio de Janeiro), co-writer of Pedro Luis and Suely Mosque in that first moment of fusion, Arícia now reclaims her black lyrical and dance sound. In this synthesis of her musical history she fosters the connection with the divine through the drums of Candomblé inserted into her modern sound, artisanally conceived on her computer at home. More contemporary than this is impossible."Black is beautiful" makes up part of the repertoire and is sensational within this context, but we already have the known “Dança do Coração”, “Tentei” and remakes of older songslike “Onde Mora o Segrêdo (Ginga Rainha de Angola).” This one tells the story of an African queen who skillfully negotiated the slavery of her people with the Portuguese. She converted to Catholicism, made agreements, prevented horrors and maintained her roots. Her name, "Ginga," today is a term that defines balance, equilibrium, cool, witty, hip, flexible, characteristics that are not lacking for Arícia Mess. And that is the theme of this work from an artist who does not conceive art with any other objective than what is true to her own life. To sing is to bring joy, her mission in this world. In Europe an EP is being released by the label Curve Music. Her myspace web address is becoming very popular with visitor hits, messages and exchanges. For now we have only one CD, but with this young new band she promises a new release soon. In the meantime, do not miss her shows. It's like she sings "There it comes, there comes the good time!” Take advantage when you hear Arícia Mess to leave dancing and singing “I wanna Black…”AboutAríciaSinger and composer, the "Carioca" Arícia Mess, since the 90's has mixed funk, soul, rock, samba and other Afro-Brazilian rhythms in an innovative and consistent body of work, having experimentalism as her registered trademark in the search of rhythms and sounds that permeate acoustic and electronic music, new sounds within the universe of black music. The first album launched in 2000, entitled “Cabeça Coração,” produced by her partner, Carlos Trilha, had ample promotion and recognition by special critics. Her performances conquered a diverse audience, given the force, originality and artistic conception of the presentation. In 2009, Arícia works on promoting the international release of an EP of unpublished songs and in presenting the prereleased, new album, "Onde Mora o Segredo," made up of songs included in this EP and other unpublished songs expected for the second half.Reviews"One of the best voices to emerge in the decade of 1990."Antônio Carlos Miguel, O Globo"One of the singers who represents the beginning of the era 2000."Peter Alexander Sanches, Folha de São Paulo“Arícia Mess knows how to dominate in the perfection of stage arts."Diário de Notícias – Lisbon"The feeling that music is a transcendental power that yields a tribute to life comes to the surface when Arícia gets on stage."www.myspace.com/ariciamess
