Who was Cullen Sawtelle?

Cullen Sawtelle was a U.S. Representative from Maine.

Born in Norridgewock, Maine, Sawtelle received his early education under private tutors and was graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1825. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1828 and practiced in Norridgewock until 1841. Register of probate 1830-1838. He served as member of the Maine Senate from 1842 to 1844.

Sawtelle was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress. He served as chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business.

Sawtelle was elected to the Thirty-first Congress. He served as chairman of the Committee on Revolutionary Claims. Attorney and credit manager for several mercantile firms in New York City 1852-1882. He died in Englewood, New Jersey, November 10, 1887. He was interred in Brookside Cemetery in Englewood.
