Who was Daniel Pettit?
Sir Daniel Eric Arthur Pettit was an English footballer and industrialist.
Having graduated from Quarry Bank High School in 1934, Pettit made a name for himself playing amateur football for Cambridge University, where he was reading History at Fitzwilliam House. Whilst still at university he represented Great Britain at the 1936 Summer Olympics.
He subsequently became a distinguished industrialist, serving as chairman of the National Freight Corporation from 1971 to 1978, and Director of Lloyds Bank from 1977 to 1985. He was knighted for his services to industry in 1974.
